Anyone have an easy way to remove bottom anchor pin on brake assymbly? Book says to pry it out, but no luck at all with this. Also, is there a trick to removing and replacing the springs at the top? Thanks

hi there bryan. ive changed these brakes for about
twenty five years now ever since i worked in my fathers allis dealership
and the bottom pin can be really tough. heres the best procedure ive found so far. after removing the lock assy. on the pin, i use a penetrating oil
overnight if possible and also, with a hammer, i try to drive the pin inward slightly
to break it loose from the diff. hsg.. now, you have to get with it on the hammer fairly hard
and this pin can take it, but try a use direct blows so as not to distort the groove
in it. if you do though, you can clean it up later. a pipe wrench or vise grip pliers is
the next ingredient. i try the vice grips first. this pin is hard enough material that you dont need to worry about hurting the pin. it will damage the jaws of the pliers first.
see if you can get the pin to start turning. this may be only a fraction of an inch at first, but if it moves youre in good shape. i then go back and forth with the vice grips until i can use a prybar to start the pin coming out. it may also be frozen into the brake shoes also, so you may find that you get it going part of the way only to stop coming out.
now it gets tougher. you have to take a torch and heat the shoes where they ride on the pin
to free them up. if you didnt get the pin to start turning yet, you will have to apply heat to the diff. housing itself, especially to the inside bore, since its usually where the pin is stuck the hardest.
be careful not to get the metal too hot in one spot and start the cast to melt. now you may have to drive the pin in a little further to break it loose and get it to spin in the bore. its a slow, hot, and usually painful
job for the guy on the creeper running the torch, but its the best way to get those bottom pins loose.
it should go without saying that the pin should have neverseeze on it when reinstalled. if that doesnt work, email me and well go from there on the pin.
as for the springs on top, remove the old ones any way you want but a torch is the easiest. just clip the hooks and yankem out. as for installation,
get them hooked on the inside first, then take some strong wire, stainless if you can get it, and tie it onto the spring and pull the hook through the diff. hsg.. i know this is longwinded, but its better sometimes to say too much than not enough. regards, grapeape
