I have an opportunity to purchase a 1939 B, engine runs, not burning oil, good sheet metal, needs new rear bearings, seat, rear tires and lights (according to owner). It also comes with a side mount plow and a belly mount cultivator (was used by a small potato farmer [farm, potatos or farmer - not sure which was small]). Hasn't been run in a year, not stuck, kept in garage. Is $500 a good price?

Not worried about seats or lights. Are the rear bearings a big job? How much for rear rubber?

Thanks to all you AC experts out there. I'm a Farmall H guy and want a bit of orange around here.

Steve

The rear bearings are a bit of work, bbut you don't need a "cherry picker" like the other fellow was thinking, but you will need a strong back. Both rear wheels need to come off and the axles and housings removed. You can sit the middle of the tractor on a support to do this, the wide front will hold it, but block it good. I did my 49 B, the rear wheels could rock slightly side to side, the bearings and seals needed replacing. Do the brakes while you're there. The bearings and seals can be matched with bearings and seals available from auto parts stores, you may have to make the shims (there are wear shims required) and you will need a detailed shop manual for a B or C, they're are quite similar.

$500 is a good price-my brother just bought one 2 months ago in about the same shape, maybe a little rougher.

Steve,
My I&T manual shows two bearings on each bull pinion shaft and two bearings on each stub axle shaft for a total of eight bearings and a bit of heavy work to get them all replaced. Hope you have a "cherry picker" in your shop or a chain hoist. those axle housings look HEAVY! Doesen't look too tough, just a lot of heavy parts to remove and probably a dirty job.
The price sounds right though.

Phil

If you don't buy it, let me know. sounds like a fair price. As for the bearings, there are several in the final drive assembly, none of which i beleive are to hard to replace. your best bet is to get yourself some kind of repair manual, they go into great detail on most repairs.
