would like information on how would convert from 6 volt to 12 volt system

I installed a 12 generator, regulator, and battery. Installed a resistor on the coil + wire and left the 6 volt starter in place. This has lasted over two years and doing fine. the 12 volts spin the starter nice and fast and if yo don' have to grind the starter for long periods of time it will last for years. Use to do the same thing to old 6 volt cars. Had to change the light bulbs to 12 volts. you do have to install the resistor to the coil or else you will be burning out points if it has a distributor. A magneto you wn't have to worry about it.

Here is how I did mine. I won't say that this is absolutely the correct way or the recommended way, but it has been working.

I replaced the generator with an alternator from a 1973 Ford truck. I had to make a minor change to the mounting bracket but I used the same adjusting bracket that was used for the 6 volt generator. I also used a voltage regulator from a 1973 Ford truck. ( It is the external kind that mounts on the fender and it looks like a little black box) I wired up the alternator properly to the voltage regulator and an ammeter ( I think). You can get a wiring diagram from an auto repair manual.

I replaced the coil with a 12 volt coil ( also from a 1973 Ford truck.

That's it. I don't have any lights on my tractor so I didn't have to do anything with that. Right now it isn't charging properly so I need to diagnose whether the problem is in the alternator or regulator. Have been running this way for over 10 years.
