V8 powered HDG6

I recently traded for an HDG6 Allis dozer. The engine had went bad and the previous owner had repowered it with a Chevy 350 and truck 4 speed in front of the dozer trans.. It works pretty good but I would like to replace the 4 speed with an automatic. Has anyone had any experience or knowledge on a conversion like this.

Why do you want a automatic? The only vague positive is the torque converter. With all the gear multiplication you have the torque converter in unnecessary.

With a decellerator pedal and an auto-trans it would be possible to shift from forward to reverse and vise-versa without clutching and shifting and if you were having to back along way you would have more speeds to choose from at lower RPM. You would have a setup similar to the way the newer dozers are setup. If you have ever watched a newer dozer work you would have to agree this is a big improvement.

Since you seem stuck on being a shiftless operator: You need a very short automatic yet one that is stout. A THM-350 would be the smallest I would recommend. The next question is how long is the driveshaft between the 4 speed and the input shaft of the dozer. My guesstimate is your luck will run out, as the engine will have to be move forward to make the THM-350 fit, ie. the THM-350 will be longer than the 4 speed and its bellhousing. Be sure to add a big automatic transmission cooler.

Try finding an old Powerglide, cast iron if possible... slightly shorter in length than the 350 or 400 tran

There not tough enough for a dozer not even one the size of his HDG6. A powerglide is for a 2000 lb. car at a drag race that is it!

You will have all sorts of transmission problems with an automatic. If you want an automatic, go to a twin disc marine transmission and large cooler. Twin disc has transmissions that will adapt to the 350 engine and you can get a range of yokes and universel joints to fit. the only thing is the marine is just forward and reverse. If you couple it to the 4speed you will have a range of gears. There again space.
