Where do I find the engine serial number?

I can't find the engine serial number for my Allis 'C'. The manual says it should be on the left rear of the engine, starting with CE..., but I don't find any number there. I did find the number AM2916 on the right side of the engine block but this doesn't correspond to any known serial numbers. I need the serial number to utilize my parts manual accurately. Were the numbers just painted on or were they raised as part of the block. I seek the wisdom of others...

They were stamped into the block, so they probably are filled with paint. Where the torque tube mounts to the block on the left side of the engine is a flat spot on the bellhousing. Thats where they should be. You probably just need to scrape off some of that paint..

I don't know where it's located on a C, but your book is probably right. It was stamped, so if it's there it should be easy to find. It is possible that it didn't get stamped, as it was done by hand, and, well, people get lazy. My WC block has no serial number. Odds are, if youever need an engine part, you'd get the latest serial number part anyway, as it was generally better. Provided it'll fit. Another way to narrow it down is to look at what did have serial number breaks in the parts book, then check to see what you have. YOu can get it narrowed down to a range and go from there.

I am having governor problems so I was looking to see what the governor set-up/linkage for my 'C' should be. When I realized that mine didn't look exactly like any in the book I looked for the serial number, which I couldn't find. In order to put it back to 'original' (and correct) condition, I need to know exactly which diagram to look at. This is not the first time I have found things 'not like they should be' so I guess I will try to narrow it down and hope I guess right. thanx.
