Hi. Just found this site. I am a misplaced farm boy and my Dad is getting to the point of getting rid of his equiptment. He has a WD45, wide frontend, diesel that I am very partial to and would like to fix up. The problem is this. While it ran before it was parked he told me that the block was cracked and that this was a very common problem for these tractors and he did not know how to go about repairing it outside of replacing it. My question is, can a motor for this tractor be found reasonably priced and is this really a common problem with them? This tractor was used as the main workhorse on our farm. Any help would be appreciated. I really don't know what I would be getting myself into by trying to restore this tractor. Is it worth it? Thanks.

If you ever want to sell it, give me a ring. 414/343-4580. My brother restored our original one from the farm and pull's it. He did one for me this past year - and it is better than new. What a sound the Buda makes!

WD-45 diesels are somewhat rare and I don't know what other tractor used that engine to find another block. If the block is cracked external, then the fix could be cheap. If, however, it's cracked between the cylinders, or the webbing, then it can take more money to repair. I'm not familair with the problems associated with that engine, so I don't know where they crack, but if the rest of the tractor isn't too bad, I'd try to fix it up. Thear the block down and see what you have. As far as I know, you could put a gas back in it, too.

If the block is cracked...as a rule it can be welded or if it's minor, there are many wonder agents to seal things up.
If you want to have something very few have..... .go get a 262 cu.in.gas engine out of a Gleaner combine.
It will fit in where the 45 diesel sat but will have about 25 more horse.
My recommendation is..... .if at all possible repair the diesel..... .they're a beautiful tractor and extremely hard to beat!!

Bud, What model Gleaner had the 262 gas? This could be a good replacement for a bad D17 Diesel too, couldn't it?

I replaced the engine in my Series III D-17 this summer with one out of an E Gleaner. Had to change the timing gear cover but left the govenor from the combine on runs a little faster made my own plate to cover up the fuel pump opening in block if you have any questions about other changes contact me

Dave,

The C and CII Gleaner combines used the G262 engine, as did the AII and later A combines I believe. The diesel versions of the above combines used the D262. You are correct, both the G262 and D262 will fit in a D17D, D19, and WD-45D. I used to have a D17 with the 262 gas engine. The tractor was originally a diesel but someone replaced the diesel with the 262 gas. I had a 3 inch straight pipe on it. Oh, did she sound good when the governors opened up!

Good luck,
Brian

Thanks guys. Talking to my Dad, it sounds like an impossible thing to accomplish. But after reading what you said here, it sounds encouraging. Any info, links, websites, or anything else on this tractor would be greatly appreciated. Guess its time to drag it out of the barn and get to work!
Thanks again! I will keep reading this forum! Glad I found it.

I don't know your mechanical abillity, but there is nothing nicer to look at than WD-45 diesel all painted up.

Cockshutt tractors used Buda engines untill A-C bought Buda out. The Cockshutt 40 used the same engine as the WD45 while the Cockshutt 50 used a 273cid displacement. If you ever want to pull your 45, you'll want to fix the diesel. Most places won't allow you to run other than the original engine. Brian
