i disassembled the head on my wd and i was wondering how much clearance (slop or wobble?) is acceptable? whil the valve is loose you can spin it in the guide and notice a bit of deflection. the valve seats look fine too. before i dissasembled the tractor she would smoke when warm and weep antifreeze from the head gasket between clylinders 2 and 3. the smoke was slighly blue and had some white hiccups in it...am i on the right track...also my comression readings were 106, 101, 86, 103. didnt like the 86 but was happy with the others. thanks for any input

Rob,

Worn limit in most engines is .0055 , but to have a good running engine it is best to use .0045 as the worn limit.Valve stem seals may slow the oil from running down the stem but it will do nothing for the poor running of the engine . The low compression could be from the excessive valve guide wear or from a ring , piston , or liner wear problem. Valve stem seals get blamed for a lot of things that they don't do. Actually that engine probably did not have seals when new ,and a little oil on the stem is a good thing, it helps keep the stem and valve guide from wearing .I think that engine has replacable guides and don't need to be bored and reamed to replace, just drive them out and drive in a new set. george

If the seats look good and it runs good, I would just install Ford-Type valve seals (umbrella seals) and put it together... They are cheap and do a lot to control oil travel down the intake stems..

If the seats look good and it runs good, I would just install Ford-Type valve seals (umbrella seals) and put it together... They are cheap and do a lot to control oil travel down the intake stems..

Hello Rob,
That is a tuff question I can't find a spec. for ware on the guide. I always grab the valve head with my finger tips and move the valve side to side when it is close to the head. if you can see it move from a arms length then I would replace the guides. I would sugest having a machine shop do the work. also check the head with a staight edge to see if it is flat. if your guides are not too bad you could put valve seals on the valve to cut down on oil passing thru the guides. look over that one low pressure cyl, be sure to put bolts in to hold down the linners before turing over the engine. and check for scores in the cyl.
