Allis B valve cover gasket

I tried to install a new valve cover gasket on my Allis B. The new gasket is too thin since the valve cover will not bottom out on the gasket. It bottoms on the rocker arm hold down bolts. I will call Tony tomorrow to confirm that he shipped the right gasket.

Any suggestions?

Hello Wayne,
I don't want to sound like a wise guy but did you try turning the valve cover around. it has been a while since I had a Allis B in the shop but If i remember the bolts are down the middle and it could be put on with the front in the back I think one side is taller for the rockers.

Good question, however I tried reversing it even though I was sure it went the other way. I even checked a picture I took of the engine before I removed the valve cover. The slanted side is next to the manifold.

The gasket measures 1/8th of an inch thick. I plan on putting permatex between two cork gaskets. Considering what was there before, that should work OK.

I will have to measure it when I go back to the shop in the morning. It looks like a typical valve cover gasket to me.

Are the valve cover bolts the same thickness as the rocker hold down bolts? The ones on my tractor are. I thought maybe someone switched them around but it is not the case.

My father owned the tractor since I was about 6 or 7 years old and I do not ever recall pulling off the valve cover.

What kind/thick of washers do you have under the nuts holding the rocker arms down. The only time I had that type of a proble was when I shimed under the rocker arm stands to make up for what I milled off of the head. I put thin washers on the top and ground the nuts off to where the cover fit tight on the gasket. The cork gasket is a little thicker that the black rubber. Look on the inside of the cover to see if it had been tightened so that the top is bent down. Some times people get handy with a 9/16 socket and put way to much torque on the top.
