Hi all My 190xt series three is sick. I was hauling manure and it just shut down. puff of white smoke came out by radiator. Now engine has no compression. I took off valve cover gasket tonight, and found two bent pushrods, and that camshaft is not turning. Should I try digging deeper, and rebuild, or put in a different motor. Money and time involved are my big concerns. Dont want to break the bank on rebuild but with a different motor could end up with problems also. What would you guys do. sorry for long post. Thanks in advance

Ross

Hello Ross,
I agree with the earler writer. something in you valve train went bad and the smoke from the radiator was the intake blowing back. if the engine ran good before i would pull the head and front cover fix the cam problem and send the head out to machine shop. the parts are high priced but It will be much easer that swaping engines. I can get you the parts you need.
Good Luck Ed

I was right with you except the smoke out of the radiator somehow that is not good you certainly have a hole somewhere, blown head gasket, sleeve o-rings etc. or worse.

It wouldn't take too much to get it running again, I suspect. Perhaps you had a timing gear failure or the cam broke. Pull the timing gear cover off, check the gears, and cam, find a reman head, used push rods and you're back in business. Sometimes you can find a combine engine reasonably, but you'd spend some time changing adapter plates and you still don't know what shape it's in.

Good luck!

It really depends on your situation.... If you absolutely need a tractor now, maybe to buy one with a great engine would not be so bad and work on the other one at leisure. Did it run out of water? Oil? was the oil pump working? It sounds like lack of lubrication? Maybe pulling the pan could be helpful. The oilpump is usually driven off of the camshaftand a loss in oil pressure would cause the cam to seize and oil to stop reaching the top end causing the pushrods to bend. If the tractor cranks over make sure it has oil pressure. the loss of compression could be from the bent rods, although you got to find out why it did it and what the damage is first. Is the cam broken? Good luck. remember your time is relatively inexpensive compared to a shop. I would have a prospective tractor get a mechanical inspection before I buy.

As long as nothing came through the block i would go with a Major Overhaul. Like you said, if you buy a used engine you have no idea whats been done to it or if it has had a Quick fix. At least with a rebuild you know its done and done right. Push rods are expensive for them, i bought new ones and cost me $34.00 a piece! from my Agco dealer.
