How many bottom plow for D 17

Hi Everyone:

I searched archives for this question but could not find anything. I am new owner of D 17 and would like to know what the tractor is rated for plowing? 3 bottom or 4 bottom? I have medium soil, not heavy clay and the ground will be crop land that is plowed every year. I would guess that this tractor can handle 4 bottoms in wheat ground and maybe a touch 3 bottom in sod. What are your thoughts. Also, how about cultivator - 12 ft?. Tandem disc - 8 ft?. Am I in the ball park here? Thanks.

I have plowed several fields of alfalfa with a 74 4x14 fully mounted at 7 to 9 inches deep in 2nd low. My D17 handles it pretty well though pulling 3x16 in 3rd high feels better. Had always puled a 12 1/2' AC dick w/18" blades and a 13 1/2' and 16" blades using TB and duals seemed to handle both well.

Rich - forogot to answer about the other implements. first I'll start off guessing you have at least 16.9X28 rears with fairly good tread left of them.

For a tandem disc, depends on what you are doing with it. To just cut up cornstalks, you could probably run as big as a 12 foot wheel disc in 2nd gear. To run over plowed ground, 10 foot is all you will want, 8 foot would be a little small unless it was a heavy disc.

For a field cultivator, I'd say 10 foot would be a good size if you wanted to get any kind of depth with it and/or run a spike harrow behind it. Mike

I run a 4-14 fully mounted model 74 with the heavy concave coulters on my D17 Series IV that has maybe 100 hours on full 4 1/8 overhaul. Also has a rebuilt and polished carb. That's in a mix of medium loam soils to some clay running in low 2nd or low 3rd about 6-7 inches. High 2nd is a little too much with 4 bottoms. A 3-16's would be a good choice if you have a wider mix of soils or are turning ground that hasn't been done in a while. Mike

I pull a 3x16 snap coupler plow with mine and plow deep. Pull a 13'6' tandem disk with the wheels raized off the ground. Mine is a series 4 diesel new tires and fluid in the tires. My traction booster does not work as someone put an aftermarket 3 point on it that I have to remove every time I plow. I have no trouble pulling this stuff. I have to slow down when disking, I throw drit too far and ridge the soil.

When I started farming in "72, I had a D17, 3-16 semi-mounted plow, 12 foot AC disc and 10 foot JD field cultivator. AC actually made a 5-14 fully mounted plow for the D17, but that would work only on really light ground. Sand farmers had four bottoms behind, but on heavy ground, three was plenty. BTW, always used duals with the disc and field cultivator.
