removing G rear axle/drum

We bought a supposedly partially restored G, only to find that one of the rear axles has been sheared off. The entire components of Fig Y Rear Axle in the repair manual is in one piece still - we can't figure out how to get the key out and get the drum out to see inside. DH has taken the studs and lock screws out. Is there a certain angle to hit/turn to get it apart? Thank you.

And while you are here, any idea of the cost of a replacement axle?

Thanks folks. DH looked again at the diagram in the instructions in the morning and made a tool to "unscrew" the drum. It hasn't worked yet, but we found a complete axle for $125 so the pressure is off.

He had been carefully following the diagrams in the back of the Operating Instructions manual, but hadn't read the page you scanned and sent that gave instructions.

Thanks again. I have wanted a G for years and am looking forward to getting it running.

If you look down in the drum you should see two slotted type holes. These are for pulling the drum. Then it takes a bunch of heat on the hub. I had one that I had to cut the drum out. Had to buy an axle and drum. I bought a used axle and a new drum. The cost has been forgotten for my healths sake.

Beth, the only thing holding the axle into the housing is the two square headed screws on the small part of the housing. As far as the drum and axle, the axle is a press fit on to the axle. If it is the newer cast drum you can pull it with a homemade puller with threaded rod. The older drums have a key hole slot and take some different things.Let us know what you have and we'll guide you from what you find. An axle should be less than $200

Yup Joe, press fit. After 50 years the one drum on mine came off the other one was bent up around the hub and never did move. The drum was no good bent up so I cut it out with a torch.
Some will come with advise and others just don't give up with anything but a fire wrench.

I know what you mean Dick! I've run about 50-50 on the old slotted ones, never had trouble with the cast ones( they jump right off after several hours of sweat!)

Thank you. It is the key hole style. Has given DH things to think about - making a two-pronged lever that will push against the end of the axle.

Knowing it is "just" a pull out thing helps. He was trying to get the key out.

But, can you quantify how much heat? Red hot? Like, are you making one piece swell or contract, or just making the old grease/etc slippery?

DH is very happy for this advice. Says he was wondering what those slots were for. It might work!

Now, any advice on how to buy rear tires? Standard size but I would like them lug style for better traction. I haven't made any calls yet, but tried online to get an idea and couldn't find any sources.
