I would like to replace the hydraulic and transmission oil on my D14. Where are the oil drains for these parts? Obviously on the bottom, but are they difficullt to get to? What type of oil would work for my tractor. I have the manual, but am not near it. Where do tractor owners buy oil? TSC, Walmart, ?

I finally have the tractor running. The clutch was rusted to the transmission shaft, so I had the tractor split, and the clutch replaced (removed with a torch). It cost more than I like, but was completed in a couple days. the shop even picked up the tractor, fixed it, and brought it back to the farm.

Don't know exact location of plugs but they should be easy to find. My book indicates a single plug for the transmission and rear axle. The power director has a reservoir as well.

Many folks use a good grade of hydraulic fluid for the hydraulic system. Allis speced out 20 weight non detergent and hydraulic fluid is about the same viscosity. I use 30W non detergent with excellent results in both my D-14 and D-17. The power director also calls for 20W non detergent. I've never had to add fluid to the power director so I don't know if there would be an adverse effect in using 30W or hydraulic fluid. I would think you would be safe with 30W but if you live in the far northern US, it may a bit stiff in the winter. I would not suggest motor oil which has detergent. The power steering also calls for 20W non detergent oil. Detergent oil (motor oil) in the power steering will cause foaming and a mess.

The transmission calls for 90W gear oil. It is hard to find but again I've had excellent results with 85W-130W gear oil which is a multi viscosity gear oil.

Thanks for the information. I think I will stick with the 20 wt here in Ohio. I may not need to use the tractor much in the wintertime, but in case i do, it would be nice to have it perform well. I found my maunual, and it shows the fill caps, but not the drain plug. I should be able to find it.

I was thinking about using synthetic outboard low end lube for the final drives. I have used it in worn out lawn mower engines to reduce oil consumption. It seems to work well for the last couple years. I may try it in the final drives.

Thank you for all of your help

Final question, what do people do to keep the clutch from freezing to the pres plate? I had to have the clutch plate cut off to get the thing changed. Dont want to do that again.

Thanks in advance.

I'd check your manual for the final drive oil. I think it is supposed to be high pressure gear oil.

I have a sticking problem on my 8N Ford. I just put a cinder block on the pedal a few hours before use. After a few hours it releases and works fine. Some leave the cinder block on all the time. Try a few hours and if it doesn't do the trick, leave it on there all the time. It is a problem caused by the clutch disk itself and a new disk may solve it. The one on my 8N looks like new but it sticks after sitting for a while.

I will check the oil before using it. I know friends of mine use it fro their 4x4 axles.

Thanks for the clutch advice. I guess the idea is to disengage the clutch so it dosent stick to the pplate.

Thanks for the information
