The starter on my D-14 spins and whirs but doesn't always engage the engine. Can anyone tell me what the problem is?

Thanks for any help you can provide,
Doug

Centrifugal force is what makes a starter work, to through the gear out to engage the flywheel. That force is reduced by all of the problems the other two posters mentioned. Need speed and low friction.

meant to say - to "throw the gear out"

Let's toss out centrigual force, and say inertia... in reply to JMS/.MN, 04-11-2008 13:06:34
Let's toss out the term "centrigual force", and say "inertia", which is what many starter drives are classified as... intertial starter drives.

HOW do you figure CENTRIGUAL FORCE has anything to do with the drive screwing in or out on the shaft????? ?

Geez Bob cabin fever much, starter spinning throws the starter gear into mesh with flywheel,OK? Needs to be free to move, OK? The answer to the original question is MAYBE: 1-weak battery=slow starter speed, 2-gummed up/rusted starter shaft, 3-worn starter, 4-bad connections. Any order!!!!

WHY do you advocate perpetuating the use of incorrect terminology???

Could be a number of things wrong. Weak battery, bad bendex gear, bad ring gear on the flywheel, to much grease on the starter drive and or poor connections, or even a weak starter

I had the same problem on a AC WD45 I just bought. I would pull the starter rod and it would just freewheel in there and not engage. I pulled the starter out, looked at the gear mechanism and found nothing wrong, I spun the gear and found it was dry. I sprayed it down with silicone lubricant and now it works great and engages in the engine as it should. I think it was just dry and not engaging forward as it spins like it should.

Spray can dry graphite works GREAT there, 'cause once it's dry, dirt won't stick to it.
