I JUST PURCHASED A 1940 MODEL B WITH A CRANK START WITH NO BATTERY. THE PROBLEM IS ONCE THE TRACTOR IS RUNNING IM NOT REALLY SURE HOW TO SHUT IT OFF. THE ONLY WAY I SHUT OFF THE MOTOR IS BY SHUTTING OFF THE GAS AT THE BOWL. NOT SURE IF THERE IS A SHUT OFF FOR THE TRACTOR..LET ME KNOW.

I would strongly suggest improvising a 'kill' switch that can be operated from the driver's seat as a safty measure!!
I have seen a couple of unexpected 'rearing' incedents that nearly led to dissaster except for quick access to the 'kill' switch.
You don't get many second chances with a back flip.
Had one tractor that the governor to carb rod fell off the governor arm while running. The carb went wide open with no load and the engine screamed. I wouldn't wanted to have wasted time shutting that down.

Had the same trouble with mine, and the screw etc was missing from the mag.
Had a wire to the points for some time and would earth the end to shut it off. Ended up making a contact through the cap to the points and making up a spring steel contact "leaf" that mounted on one of the cap screws. Worked out ok, can supply a photo if you need one.

The throtle quadrant should be adjusted so that when pulled back all the way it shuts off at last notch. Bob

The shut off is on the mag. There should be a small metal tab that is to be pushed in to "ground out" the mag on the metal body. If this tab is missing, there should still be a small screw sticking threads out. Because you have to be off of the tractor to kill it, I think this is unsafe. To kill it from the seat, you just need to run a wire from the tab or stud to a switch that you can reach from the seat. The other side of the switch will just need to be ran to ground. The switch will need to be "off" to run, "on" to kill.

You should have a short stud on the side of the magneto.

In my picture you can see the tab that you press to shut off the engine. If you have the correct magneto you will at least have the stud. Any metal strip attatched will work.

There may be a screw on the side of the magneto. If so, connect a short wire to the screw and touch the end to the metal side of the magento. This will short out the points and stop the engine.

You can "choke it out". Pull the choke all the way out and after a little bit it should shut off. I reccomend shutting it off at the fuel bowl if it will be sitting idle for at the very least a few hours, as gas can get into the line and sit in low spots. I only reccomend choking it out if you will be returning to the tractor within an hour or 2.

Thanks guys I will check the mag for the metal strip. The guy i bought it off of bought at a auction and was not sure how to shut it off too. He stated when he bought they turned if off near the cap ,but could not see what they did to shut it off.
