rear engine seal , D17

The rear seal seems to be seeping on the D17. The tractor is a 1958 Gas model. I plan to get the tractor in the shop and split it to get at the rear seal. Is there anything else that should be checked when it is apart.Any other tips?? It appears the rear support for the front axle must be supported also. Thanks!!

JMS/MN Would pulling the engine be the preferred medthod to replace seal and throwout bearing over splitting the tractor??? Thanks for the response..

Also consider rebuilding the pivots on the front and rear supports for the front axle, including adding grease zerks.

Big advantage is it eliminates the need for splitting stands, blocks, and the tractor falling on your foot! Still need a hoist, pull the radiator, pull the engine, turn it 90 degrees and lay it on the frame for R&R. Local shop did one for me that way some years ago.

My IT manual also says the tractor must be split to do a clutch. I'm going to go through my parts manual because I just am not sure. At the time we couldn't see a way to avoid splitting.

We replaced a clutch on a D-17 gas a couple of year ago. We had to split the tractor. I believe it was a series I or II. Did they change something on series III or IV which permitted pulling the engine? Or did the four of us do unnecessary work? Thanks,

You can pull the engine without splitting the tractor. Good time to replace the clutch throwout bearing.
