I have several questions: 1. Were there wide front ends for WD's?

2. If I have two tractors (WD and WD45), how can I tell the difference without using serial # (WD-###### or WD-45-#######

3. Were the wheel rim/wheel different sizes?

4. Are the transmissions different and how?

5. Can you interchane the wide front end for a WD45 on a WD?

6. Any other information would be greatly helpful!

The most accurate way to tell is, all WDs from the first to 127006 in 52 had the straight shift lever. 127007 to 146606 (the last one) had the constant mesh trans. In 53 at sn 136318 distributor ignition replaced the magneto. In 53 at serial # 146607 WD45 production began. WDs and 45s are enough alike that the numbers are the best way to know. The trans differences are the straight lever has sliding straight cut gears in it. The curved lever uses helical cut gears and sliding collars with constant mesh gears. The speeds on the curved lever trans are a little slower according to Swinford's book, but the benefits were easier shifting and reduced gear noise. Another tip off is they used different manifolds. This doesn't always hold true as when the 2 fuel manifold burned out or the regular gas manifold burned out, they usually got a 45 gas manifold in its place. WDs are more likely to have a magneto than 45s. Hope this helps, Brian.

#4 The newer Transmission was more or less a constant mesh type with helical cut rather than straight cut gears. The Speeds were different(faster) too, most notably 4th (11-1/4 vs. 9) & Reverse 3-3/4 vs. 2) #6 Though not evident from the outside, the WD-45 has a 3-plate transmission (hand) clutch rather than 2plates. There are different versions of the seat mounting hardware as well.

Bob I agree with Phil, also if I remember right on a 45 the water pump has a small hose coming off it which hooks to the thermostat right next to the hose from the radiator,on the WD the hose from the radiator just went to the thermostat. The rims are inter-changeable and on the WD the rims were 11'' and the 45's rims were 13''. Also I don't beleive that the 45's came with shutters in the grill like the WD's had.
Hope this help.

Bob,
#1 - Yes.
#2 - The differences I'm aware of are: a) All but the last WD's had a straight gearshift lever and the WD-45's were curved. b) The WD engine had a plate bolted to the block on one side and the WD-45 did not have this plate. A lot of WD's got a WD-45 engine installed when it was time to overhaul, so this makes it hard to use this 100%.
#3 - I think the wheels/tires were basically the same since the WD-45 was basically a WD with a larger, more powerful engine.
#4 - No. The transmissions were different and the WD-45 trans first showed up on the late WD's that had the curved shift lever. I don't remember exactly what the differences were, but it was an improved design.
#5 - I believe so.
#6 - If given a choice, I'd pick a WD-45 every time over a WD.

Phil
