I replaced the generator cut out with a 6 volt voltage regulator. I know the generator will charge 20 amps with the cut out, but it does not work with the voltage regulator. I suspect it is hooked up wrong. The Allis still has the positive ground and I have a positive ground regulator. Can any one tell me the correct hook up ?

Thanks,
Wayne

Just a note on my diagram that Joe used for an aid. IF using a Voltage Regulator in lieu of the Reverse Current Relay (cutout) the "F" Field circuit that runs from the 3 ohm resister to the "F" terminal on the Generator is NOT used. The switch is then used just for Lighting only. The "L" (Load) terminal does not need to be used on early model tractors. Grounds on the 6V system are super important for the system to charge and operate correctly! Make sure all cables are the correct size, connections clean, and components in good operating condition. Speaking of grounds, make sure your VR is grounded correctly also. If necessary, run an aux. ground wire off one of the mounting screws of the VR to a good clean ground either on the engine block or tranny.

the F (field) post on the generator goes to the F terminal on the regulator. you can run a test by putting a jumper wire to the ground (tractor frame) to bypass PART of the voltage regulator--- the other generator terminal is "A" and this goes to the "G" on the regulator. that is the input. the B terminal on the regulator is battery and must have 6 volts when the tractor is running. this normally comes from the ampmeter which gets its power from teh battery. the L terminal is "light" and got power from the light switch on the original setup where 4 terminal regulators were used. you might try connecting power to both the B and the L terminals and see if it charges. nwere regulators do not have the L terminal... last, do you have the voltage regulator grounded to the frame real good? if its setting on a painted bracket, clean it or run another wire from the mounting bolt to the battery ground strap.--- last, you have to tell the regulator if you are negative or positive ground. do that by touching the G and B terminals together for 1 second and get a spark prior to running motor.

the dotted lines in steves drawing are the new wires, you need to remove the old red wire from "A" generator to the cutout, and the blue wire from "F" generator to light swith.... the new regulator has "F" to the generator, "G" to generator "A" terminal, and B is battery voltage from the amp meter. after connecting, turn on the ignition switch, touch B and G terminals together to get a small spark (polarize), then start the motor and see if you are chargning.

I do not think it makes a difference, but my tractor has a magnito verses a coil.

Is the F terminal on the generator marked on the generator and is it the field wiring? If it is marked, mine must be covered with paint. Is the generator A terminal the generator output?

I was trying to use the L terminal on the voltage regulator which is not used in the diagram.

A is armature.. sometimes called 'GEN'.. and is the output.

the field terminal on the gen will be one with an insulating grommet..

Just to make sure, the lead connected to the brushes on the generator is the " GEN " or "A" output connection which will connect to the "G" ( ground) on the back of the regulator.

After messing with it for about two days on and off, I am fairly confident I have a bad regulator. The generator puts out fine with only the old cut out.

I guarantee you that the armature of the gen does not connect to the ground on the vreg. armature on gen connects to the gen/arm tab on the reg..

The G connection on the regulator is grounded to the regulator mount which is grounded to the tractor. That completes the circuit for charging? In any case maybe that is what is wrong with my regulator.

DO NOT confuse the ground tab on your regulator as the place to connect the ARMATURE.. the ARMATURE of the generator goes to either a tab marked ARM, or GEN, not GRND.

Hooking the ARM of the generator to ground will cause a short circuit.

I do not haver a "G" or generator tab on the regulator. There are three tabs marked L, Batt, and F. The tab behind the regulator is not marked. I asssume that is the Gen tab?

If it is not gen it may be marked ARM.

Flip the reg over.. if it is an a-circuit reg, like I think it is, there will be a bias resistor from the field terminal to the ground terminal.. that should help you narrow down what tabs are what.

You are right, the F or field terminal has a resistor connecting it to the regulator mounting bracket. The terminal on the back is not marked at all. That has to be the generator output to the regulator since I have been told that you do not use the L terminal.

If you can now ID all the others except that one.. yeah.. I'd say that has to be it as well.
