Is there such a thing as a factory.crank starter for a D-17?

We have a handcrank for our D17IV gas. Never have used it to start the tractor, but it sure is an excellent tool for turning the engine incrementally for setting valve clearance and setting the timing. Tom

Skyhigh has it right!! My "parts illustrations" portion of the D17 operator's manual shows a hand crank as one of the two "tools" available.

you could belt a john up pulley to pulley to start the d17.thats about all use i have for johns . other than there good cash makers .

I can't speak to the diesel D17's but the 226 cu gas D17's were designed to be hand cranked. The front casted has a pass through for the hand crank to engage the front crankshaft pulley. The pulley is cast with engagement catches and ramps for a cross-pin type hand crank. The front grill I think has a knockout that has to be removed to put the crank in. I don't remember for certain but I think even the Series IV's, at least the early ones, were still set up to be able to hand crank them. Now whether or not it would be easy to do is another story... No hand cranks for these tractors. I doubt you could ever turn one over by hand and it start, especially a diesel.
