I've got my AC5020 pistons and rods back in from the stuck fiasco and waiting on rear engine seal and gaskets to put the engine back in so I have the rod caps torqued down to a rated 54Nm or roughly 34ftlbs then I got to thinking about the old school of changing rod cap bolts out evry time you do a teardown and this engine only has a little over 1100 engine hours so here is my dilemma the IT shop manual says you don't need any bolt retainers because the rod end has a special taper to lock in the threads when torqued. I don't like this because once you deform the bolt to fit it no longer has a lock capability in my opinion so I'm thinking how about a drop or two of Locktite thread locker on them as an insurance policy for two reasons one is engine parts for this girl is becoming almost impossible to get and if they are I can see them being $20 a piece and it is a no frame tractor which means I have to split and almost totally dismantle the engine to get the oil pan off. What do you think? I've got some time since I just ordered my parts and they're at least a week or two away. As always I respect the graduates of the University of Experience which we all know the tuition is high but we learn for a lifetime.

I used red Loctite on a set of rod bolts 30 years ago or so----BIG MISTAKE!!!! Had to work on it again some years later, needed cutting torch to screech them apart.

I do use the green wicking type Loctite after assembly for a little extra insurance and the parts disassemble later with no heat and no hassel. I use the green on internal engine parts, flywheel and clutch bolts, or any place that would be a hassel if the bolts work loose. And I also torque most of it. I just hate to do things again. A little extra nit-picking seems to prevent that.

It is my understanding that those rod bolts are extra hard and prone to cracking and the cracks that cause them to fail sometimes can not be seen any other way than magna flux.

Thanks Dick, I'm going to get the part number of them and just see what they will cost and if they are available first before I get in a hurry I was going to do that anyway. CT
