Ryan,
I have a '39 RC (WC with a C engine) that uses the same underhood muffler as the B. The outlet of the muffler is flattened into an oval shape (I have no idea why) so a rain cap could not be fitted. I also suspect that even if the outlet pipe was reshaped back to round and a rain cap added that the back side of the cap would hit the hood and not allow the cap to open properly. Looks like the soup can is your only option besides a shed.

Phil

Ryan,

I have never seen a reference to a rain cap for the underhood muffler. I guess that is what tin cans are for.

It appears that the exhaust pipe has a bend in it that may keep some rain out.

I second the soup can idea. I've never seen a rain cap on an underhood muffler either. But then, I'd rather have the tall muffler on it to keep exhaust out of the face. Brian

Brian,

Just a follow up to the tall muffler (Stanley AC-1 or AC-3), I have a 1950 Model B. When I went to the A-C dealer, the catalog of Stanley mufflers showed that the muffler inlet pipe that attaches to the manifold should measure 1 3/8 inches in outside diameter. When I got the muffler home, it wouldn't fit, so I measured the inlet pipe. The OD is 1 1/2 inches. I called the dealer who measured other Stanley manufactured mufflers for the Model B, and they all measure 1 1/2 inches rather than the 1 3/8 inches as specified in the catalog.

Either Stanley is manufacturing incorrectly sized mufflers or they have just chosen not to adhere to the specs in the catalog. In either case, the muffler doesn't fit. I had to go to the Advance Auto parts store and buy an adapter to get the muffler to fit.

Just a point to those who may choose to buy the tall muffler for their A-C Mod B or Mod C.

I had the same problem with a WD. the muffler would not fit. I then took a chisel and tapped around the opening and found that there was part of a old muffler rusted inside the hole. With much effort I removed all of the rusted metal. It was VERY rusted it came out in chips. I installed the new muffler in the hole it fit just snug.

Tony,

Thanks for the insight. I never thought of that. I will look a lot closer when I get home. Maybe I have the same problem.

Rick
