Magneto VS. Distributor gear

I am in the process of changing over the stock 12v distributor, to a stock Magneto. Another forum member said that I need to change the drive gear from the distributor to the magneto, which I have.
Any other believers in this? And if I have to swap gears, can I do this through the governor housing? Or, do I have to take the front off the tractor of my 51 B?
Is the timing of the "governor-magneto" drive gear important? If yes, what do the marks look like?

Thanks a lot

Your 51' B could have came with a Battery Ignition around that time. Late 40's, early 50's is when they started showing up on the B model from what I've read over the years. Removing the Distributor & Drive should reveal the Govenor coupler that meshes with the impulse coupler on your mag. If you have a large gear on the back of the Mag you intend to use, your Mag needs to have an impulse coupler with the matching rectangular lugs that fit into the coupler on the governor similar to what your Distributor drive has, but a little larger. Sounds like you have peaches and apples there. Personally, I would leave the Distributor and drive on and install an electronic ignition in the Distributor. No more points and condenser to worry about changing anymore, and your Ignition system will be solid state and precise. And I'm a Mag guy that rebuilds mags for folks. If you're not familiar with Mags, stay with the Distributor and drive unit till you familiarize yourself with a Magneto. If you do decide to go E.I. in your Distributor, you'll never look back... HTH

The slot in the governor gear should be nearly level from side to side when the engine is ready to fire #1 cylinder for the mag to mate up properly, and the rotor of the mag should be pointing at the timing lug in the mag cap(about 10:30 when looking at the rotor while facing forward on the tractor), without the impulse being 'cocked'.
If the slot is not level you will have a tough time 'cheating' to get the timing right, if at all.

Do you have a mag. with a gear on it? If so you have one for a V4 wisconsen. Get a mag. for a AC tractor.

WHY would you think the governor drive gears need to be changed??? That's REALLY absurd!

I'm not quite sure what you are looking for, but perhaps the picture and sketch of timing marks & gears on this page of Dick L's photo album will help some. Dick probably has the answer to your question.

Stu;

I appreciate your good hlep. Maybe if I explained it this way:
I removed the orgiinal , factory 12 volt distributor from my 51 B.
Whe I looked at the drive gear in the block it had the "tangs" that mate up with both the distributor and magneto. I have a FM original magneto that I want to install on this governor gear. So my question is can I run this magneto on this gear, which appears to a bit smaller from the magneto gear, OR do I need to run the gear which came with the magneto when I bought it? Just want it runnin again, and thanks for all the help!

I think a 51 B would be magneto from the factory. I would almost bet someone has put the distributor conversion on it. You should be able to remove the right angle drive and bolt on a mag. If I remember right, Factory distributor ignitions did not start being used untillate WD-45 production. I worked at an Allis. dealer in the early 70's. Most farmers are a very conservative bunch. One day we had a farmer in the shop having mag problem. I tried to sell him one of the battery convertions. At the time I think the cost was about $50.00. He said NO he wanted a NEW MAG. I looked up the cost of a new mag. A new mag was about $375.00 in 1970 dollars. We wound up getting his mag fixed.

What I don"t understand is when you say it is an "original factory 12 volt distributor". In 51, it would be 6v.

You should see where the rotor is pointing on the distributor before you remove the distribuor and then don't move the engine. Your drive on the mag needs to the same as the drive on the distributor so it will mate with the gear in the block. You turn the rotor to the same position
on the mag as the rotor on the distributor was pointing and install on the engine. Hal
