D-10 6 to 12 volt Conversion

i have just purchased a d-10 at an auction. i am basically wanting to know what to look for that would let me know if it is a 12 volt or 6 volt system. The tractor is using a normal 12 volt car battery, but is using a positive ground. it also has the orginal generator, starter, external regulator, coil(maybe, looks like the one in my 71 chevy 1/2 ton), and points distributor. any information on what type of system i have or how to convert to full 12 volt negative ground would be helpful.

I'm wit' John B on that one. It maybe a Series II D10 which was 12V PG. If its charging fine and everything is working, don't fix it. Leave it be. Both the 6V PG and the 12V PG worked fine. Both systems just need a little TLC once in a while to make sure everything is in working order...

If its 12 volts Pos ground and all works n the ammeter reads correct and the genny keeps the battery charged I wouldnt do nuttin to it....The genny can charge at either polarity once polarized and if the ammeter reads bass ackwards it could have a simple lead swap to cure that. The coil should match the battery polarity i.e. for Pos grnd its + wires to distributor but if Neg ground its - does...

Is it keeping the battery charged as is?? Does it have a working ammeter n whats it doing??

Yo Denny, Im down here in Mission near McAllen on Old Busines 83 in the Rio Grande Valley with all them old retired codgers lol I got so busy with practicing banjo at all the country jams n square dancing playin euchre I done forgot all about n have up on those tractor showswe talked about..... ... WE will head North towards Dallas first of MaRCH as my favorite daughter has her b day then n has a new boyfriend we can check out..... ..

First thing I would do it with a meter check battery voltage when its not running and then with it running. If when its not running its say 12.5 volts and when running say 13-14 volts that means some one has worked on the generator and your good to go with out doing any thing else. If it reads lower the battery voltage then you will need to work the system over and install an alternator of have the generator worked on to put out 12 volts. My WC speed patrol still has a generator on it but its a 12 volt one and works just fine

There were three series of D10's produced, the serial number will tell you which series you have. The serial number is stamped on the torque tube flange where it bolts to the engine on the left side. The engine serial number is stamped on the engine flange at the same location.Series 1 D10 were 6 volt positive ground and the series II and III were 12 volt positive ground.Series 1 D10's are numbers previous of 3500.I have both series 1 and series II
6 volt positive ground and 12 volt positive ground
both systems work fine.I would leave original,but if you feel the need to change don't cut up the wiring harness, tape them up out of the way in case you ever want to restore to original.
