The air is supposed to go through the oil, so the inlet has to be in the oil. As the air passes through the oil, it gets filtered in the metal fibers due the filming nature of oil. You could run some gas or parts washing solvent through the metal filters every once in a while to get the dirt and gunk out. Just keep it full to the line and it'll clean the air and keep your engine breathing happy.

Thank's a bunch! Do you know what type/weight of oil I need to use? I don't have the manual that would tell me this kind of stuff. Would this be in the service manual? If so, I must get one.

I think they recommend the same weight as the enigne oil. This should all be found in the owners manual. If you need one, I'd recommend Jensen. They have a link on this site. Very nice reproduction manuals. Service manuals are nice if you do your own fixing. Get both the AC one and the I&T manual. Lots of useful information in those. Also nice to have a parts catalog to know how things go together. You can never have enough information on these things.
