CA block

I pulled apart the engine in my ca to rebuild. The block is cracked between the sleeves. Machine shop says put it together the head gasket will seal it up. I can't get myself do it. Has any one out there done it.

My C block is cracked between the bores at the top and has given me no trouble, leaks or anything. It has a milled head, 200 rpm over rev and has been used hard like this since 1969. I even ran duals on it for quite a while. My WD has the same cracks and seen hard use since 1980 with no problems. So I don't think the cracks are anything to be concerned about.
The cracks scared and discouraged me long ago when I found them, but not now. You would probably create more problems trying to fix them than to just ignore them.
I just spray my head gaskets with Rustolem aluminum paint, tack coat, 2 wet coats, with some dry time between them, and slap them on somewhat wet and install the head. Never had to redo one yet. Same thing for cars, trucks, small engines, iron heads, aluminum heads, or whatever.

I rebuilt my 41 B two years ago and had the same cracks. I have not had any problems to this date. I did find this repair if you decide to try.

I also have a few A-C model B's actually 3, two blocks are cracked top and bottom between the sleeve holes, haven't opened up the 3 rd engine. If its cracked top and bottom I may sell off everything or go looking for a used or new block.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I believe I have heard of cases where a "V" is cut where the crack was...welded....then the deck was planed. Although that would be costly.

I know the feeling but you will be hard pressed to find a block without cracks in that area. These are found in not only the Allis Chalmers engines but any wet sleeve engine that has been real hot. A machine shop has seen this and have given you good information.
To take the thought a little farther, the sleeves have only a O ring seal at the bottom. there is no seal at the top. Only the head gasket. If the head gasket can seal all the way around the top of the sleeve why would the gasket have a problem sealing over the crack. It is all the same chamber.

my B block is cracked in the same place and yes the gasket will seal it . I use my little Allis most everyday, hauling wood, running a buzz saw hauling hay and raking in the summer with no problems at all. I would guess most of them are cracked in the same place

As long as it is only the top and not the bottom , the head gasket will seal it. Most of the B. C, CA engines have cracks between cyclinders.
