D17 Regulator

Is there a way to check a regulator? Have problem of battery draining if I leave cables hooked up and let it set couple days. As long as I disconnect cables when I shut her down, no problems. Just started doing this couple months ago. I can not find any loose, corroded connections, etc anywhere; however, I pulled the cover off the regulator and one "coil" appears to have gotten hot (blue enstead of copper color). Looking for suggestions.

Carl, one portion of a Voltage Regulator is the Cutout Relay..... What it does is close once the gennys output voltage is higher then the battery so the genny can connect to n charge the battery buttttt tt open when the tractors shut down otherwise the battery runs down trying to turn the gennys as a DC motor. If this happens the ammeter swings to heavy discharge at shut down and the genny gets hot. Also if you were to remove the belt the genny would spin like the DC motor it is HOWEVER if the relay is indeed sticking closed the battery would run down realllll fast and not take a day or two.

If she dont draw high current at shutdown and takes a few days to discharge the battery the problem is more like a minor short verses a sticking VR cutout relay. There are other ways to test the VR if its not charging (to see if the genny or VR is at fauLt) but for now you might wanna test for minoR shorts. aLSO IF YOU REMOVE THE WIRE off the VR's BAT terminal (its hot dont let it short out) and then she dont run down it can still mean a VR problem of some sort.

Cut-out relay in the regulator could be sticking. You should have a 2 or 3 relay regulator. Take the top of and look at the relays. The cut-out relay has the heaviest wire on the cores. Look to see if the contacts are stuck together. If so you can fight trying to fix it, you can replace it, or you can convert you tractor to negative ground and an alternator which is much more trouble free.

pulling the battery cable is a good first test. now you know the battery is not going down by itself.- it is possible the starter or lights, etc is draining the battery, but you r probalby right on regulator.. best way to test is to remove the wire off the B terminal. If the battery goes down, the regulator is probably problem.

Might be burned and stuck into the closed position, draining away.
