D17 Return Line?

I have a D17 with a single hydraulic port with a round switch on the back. It has 2 metal lines going to it. From what I understand, one is a return line and the other the pressure line. I am needing to add a valve to allow for a 2-way hydraulic cylinder. Does anyone know which one is the return line?

I presume the return is the line that attaches or runs in on the left side. The one that comes out on the top (beneath the gas tank) has a gauge line attached to it. I am thinking that must be the out pressure line. I cannot read the gauge because of rust. I must be a pressure guage.

I am thinking I could remove the switch and attach a valve set. Is there any reason to leave the switch in place? Thanks.

 4 spool valve? in reply to Smith1000, 01-05-2008 12:22:10
I believe I will buy a 4 spool valve and then I could add a loader later if need be. I found one that the following specs:
Main pressure 2537
24 gpm max flow
spools:

1 2320 pressure, single acting
2 1812 single 3 1450 double acting
4 1667 double acting

Would this valve work okay on the D-17? Thanks.

Internal pressure on the D17 would be over 3000 psi, so you"d want a valve that handles that much for running an AC cylinder. It can have a pressure relief valve that dumps excess down to under 2000psi for common cylinders. Be aware that the low volume of flow does not increase with those lower psi valves, so cylinders will act slowly. I think 4 additional valves would be overkill- need only two for a loader. Yes, the return line is the one that screws into the left side of the housing. I think I t"eed into that at the transport valve when I added the additional valve. For future use of a loader, I"d add a low pressure front-mount pump and reservoir instead of a stack at the rear. FYI- when plugging into the remote to run another valve, you need to lock the Lift Lever so that the pump runs all the time. Front pulley should be tapped for a front pump- makes for a simpler setup and gives you INDEPENDENT hydraulics.

I see what you mean. With a low pressure pump up front, the hydraulic speed should be faster too. Thanks for the advice. The valves I am looking at will handle up to 3,500 (I believe it said)and the excess bleeds off.

I guess I'll have to live with the slow speed. I need it to open and close the gate on a round baler. Also, it would be nice for splitting wood. I hope the speed is not too slow.

That round "switch" is the transport valve, helps on certain towed implements. You really need to get the operator manual for a good description of how it works. No need to remove it to run a two-way valve. Plug the valve hose into it, run the return line back to sump. I have that on my Series III, just plug it in when I need the extra valve- otherwise use the factory remote.

Looks like I will need at least a single spool four-way control valve for a low-pressure double acting remote ram. I can then plug it in the transport outlet (as mentioned). The valve's outlet or return connects to the transport valve return line. That should basically do it. I now just need to find a valve and the rest of the plumbing.

I have an old valve made by nopak, but I don't think it will work. It is a hand direction 3-way control valve.
