John, almost alllll lll alternators require NEGATIVE ground so if at Pos ground now you MUST convert. Heres how to convert from 6 to 12 volts and from Pos to Neg ground and wire a Neg ground alternator..... 1) If its a one wire unit it output wires to the Load (NOT battery/starter) side of the ammeter. Thats the same ammeter terminal that also supplies voltage for lights and ignition switches. I use 10 Gauge wire for that. The circuit is the one that used to wire from the BAT terminal on a Voltage Regulator or Cutout Relay up to the ammmeter, but I usually replace it with a larger 10 gauge wire. 2) You CANT use any generator type Voltage Regulator, many Alternators have their own built in regulator a few an external, and most one wires are built in regulators. 3) If its a coil ignition you must EITHER add an external voltage dropping (12 to 6) series ballast resistor after the ignition switch and before the old 6 volt coil orrrrr rrrr else use a full true 12 v coil no ballast required. 4) Swap coil polarity so + is from switch and - wires to distributor. 5) Swap ammeter leads or else it will read bass ackwards. 6) You can use the existing 6 volt starter. 7) Change light bulbs to 12 volts John T
