172 cubic inches of displacement in a diesel engine is the same as 172 cubic inches of displacement in a gasoline engine. Go have a look at some of the newer, compact diesel engined tractors with similar horsepower and cubic inch displacement as what your Ford has and see what size they use for an air intake filter.
To shed a little more light on the subject, a turbo-charged engine of any given displacement will require a larger air filter than the same displacement engine without a turbo-charger, simply because the turbo will pack more air into the engine, making that engine THINK it is a much larger engine.
