I haven't used them, but there are paint strippers that will take the paint off very well I'm told. Available probably from home improvement/hardware type stores. Not nearly as dirty to use as sand-blasting either. I went that route with my restoration project and it's really hot and dirty. Of course, it does a good job of getting down to bare metal.
