There is a transmission interlock on these.When the clutch fully released there is a shaft that slides thru the trans shift rails on the side of the trans top that lock the gears in place.It's been a while but on a 250 I believe its on the drivers side up under the floorboard where the trans top meets the case.You will see a linkage arm that runs to the clutch linkage.One indicator that this is out of adjustment is the clutch pedal usually doesn't come all the way up.
