Backing is by far the safest for loading and unloading. You at least have steering and brakes. If you drive on you risk upsetting the tractor as well as removing weight from your steering which can cause problems in its' self. Then you have to unload that tractor. Coming off those ramps in reverse and hitting a brake can give you a real thrill. One that may be your last. The major concern are the people standing around. Bystanders are the dumbest people on earth and will certainly walk across your path right where you can't see them. Always drive in the direction you can see 100%. If you want to haul a tractor safely get a trailer big enough or at least put a winch on it so you can pull that tractor up and unload under winch control. Many a good manual electric or hydraulic winch are out there and not that expensive. We use an old Cub Cadet engine driving a hydraulic pump to a hydraulic motor that runs an old elevator winch. Less than $200 invested and worth every penny of safety when it is needed
