First-don't paint 'em red! Now the question is, what color/paint to use? Lots of restorers paint axles a flat black and it's generally accepted on most makes to do that. Being a little older(conservative statement) I remember how new IH tractors looked fresh from the factory and the exposed axles on the H's and M's just had a sort of preservative "clear-coat varnish" on them. The wheels had to be slid off the axle and turned around and re-installed, usually "dished out" because the tractors were shipped on railroad flatcars with the wheels set at the minimum width position and the tire tread reversed. This is when the wheel-weights were usually put on too-at least one set. Curiously the weights usually were just painted a sort of dull red primer and the dealer hardly ever sprayed 'em IH red before delivery. So a real "new tractor look" maybe should show this. Anyhow I hope this helps you decide-hey, it's your tractor and your time and money--right??
