Here in Germany it's the opposite by about the same margin. Also, there is no cost difference between regular and super UL . Now, I work for the Army and get discounted fuel coupons. Still pay real close to what you folks are paying, just not all the taxes Germans pay.
We use the same fuel as the Germans (there's not an extra slew for the Americans), but, when buying coupons, diesel costs more that gas and there is a difference between the UL prices. Still haven't figured that one out. Diesel cars are pretty common here. The new VW Beetles get 60 mpg. I've noticed that, even though folks drive a lot faster here, fuel economy in vehicles is different. Sometimes in the same car (ie. my wife has an American spec dodge stratus and gets about 20mpg. A person she works with has the same car w/ the same eng/trans that is the chrysler stratus (German specs) and gets 25 mpg.
I can't verify it other than google, but, my VW passat (German specs) gets better than the same car sold in the States.
