I remember back in the 60's both the 4-H and FFA tractor safety programs included films of tractor rollovers (mostly staged...obviously). This was also about the time that ROPS were becoming standard equipment on tractors that did not have cabs. The demonstrations almost always showed the tractor going full over as opposed to just a layover. A particularly memorable "wreck" showed an older Farmall (H or M?) in with a tricycle front end in road gear, full throttle making an abrupt turn. That tractor rolled several times. (Guess they had to use a Farmall for that trick, a JD60 just won't go that FAST!)

You will probably not beable to get specifications for building a ROPS from ANY dealer or mfg due to product liability implications. But I can imagine that a retrofit of a factory unit may be available.

The lady that lives just a half mile up the road from me with her three boys was widowed about 6 years ago when her late husband attempted to pull a stump with his newly purchased WD. He had the chain hooked too high (supposedly thinking he'd get a better angle of pull on the stump) and managed to flip the tractor over backwards onto himself.

Yes, ROPS can and do save lives, but so does good common sense and safety....Like get off and walk the ground before you drive it (preaching to myself there, pulled a dummy stunt of my own just last month. Luckily it only cost me a broken spindle, not a broken NECK!)

Gadget.

Last niht I dreamed about the day that I plowed the field of about 10 acres over on what Jimmy and Dandy called the Ledbetter field. I was driving the 1948 8N Ford tractor that Jimmy bought in 48 new This was prebably in about 1951 and maybe even befor the house was built. This would have made me to be about16 years old and I drove the tractor for nothing and would have paid to drive it if I had had any money which I didn't, but neit ... [Read Article]
