When a vehicle is used on a regular basis, a large percentage of the ATF stays in the torque convertor. If it sits unused, as the days and weeks go by, the convertor drains back into the transmission pan, raising the oil level WAY above the "running" level. So, if the pan gasket leaks, the shift shaft seal is bad, or the modulator "O" ring, or the kickdown/TV cable or it's seal are leaking, the oil will leak out. When you start and run and drive the vehicle, the oil levels again drops when the convertor fills, and the leak MAY stop, until it sits again for at least a day or two. For what it's worth, the FACTORY transmission in that pickup would be a 700-R4, unless it's a HD unit, then a THM-400 would be an option.
