Verify that the ignition resistor is being inserted into the circuit when the starter cuts out. To do this, disconnect one of the wires on the resistor and connect it to the other side. Start the engine, then disconnect the wire. The engine should die, indicating dependence on the resistor circuit. Running the engine without the resistor in the circuit will burn up your points prematurely.
