A few freebie programs that are safe and will do many of the things the retail optimizers do are: Spybot S&D (besides anti-spyware it has some tweak tools included) Advanced WindowsCare (system optimizer) TweakNow RegCleaner Std. CCleaner (CrapCleaner) and Internet Sweeper (Emory Info Eng.) MS Bootvis - for slow boot-up times (know what you're doing if you run this one!) Google their names and you should be able to find download sites. Also limit the number of programs running in the background - HP Digital Imaging Monitor that comes with many HP printers is a real resource hog. Check your anti-virus/spybot/firewall software settings. Not suggesting you disable them, but play with the settings to see if they are creating issues.
