A 12 volt system is the same as as 6 volt with the exception that the 12 has twiced the voltage and half the current. The voltage increase allows the starter to have a higher cranking capability without the heat associated with the higher current. Until the mid fifties most cars had 6 volts and the engine compression and displacement sizes were growing to the point where the starting reliabilty was questionable. To correct this situation, 12 volt systems were introduced. A few years later , this technology was applied to tractors. Old tractors are converted for many reasons. Some are in poor conditions and the 12 volts correct many hidden ills, others like the conveniece of using readily available parts and the improved benefits of the 12 volt lighting and starting. To know if you have a 6 or 12 volt system, look at the battery label or the generator. Most 12 volt gens. have 12V stamped in the housing. If the tractor has an alternator, most likely it is 12 volts. You can always put a multimeter across the posts and measure the voltage. No multimeter! Buy a 6 volt bulb and wire it up between the posts on the battery. If it burns brightly for a few minutes and then burns out, you have a 12 Volt System. Just kidding on the last sentences. Good luck
