Stitching from from dino brand to another will have very little effect - there are some differances in their chemical make up, not enought to "ruin" and engine. Where you might have an issue is if you switched an extremely dirty engine to a synthetic. They will "clean out" an engine with their high detergent levels and COULD (anything can happen) clog up the oil filter or a return hole. I have a 1984 F150 with a 302 that had a couple extremely noisy lifters. Like yours an old man had it that never blew the cobs out on it. At 20 years old it only had 71,000 miles - less then 4000 miles a year. This winter I changed the oil (Castrol GTX 10W-30) at only 1500 miles after the previous oil change revealed an nasty looking mess. Even with only 1500 miles the oil came out looking pretty dirty and I refilled it with a Castrol Sythetic BLEND - I plan on changing it again after another 1500 miles and putting in Rotella 5W40 sythetic for summer use. The second start up after filling the crankcase with the sythetic blend the lifters made no noise and haven't since.
