I've used CLR (do you have that down there) for carbs but not for any long-term soaking. It works pretty quickly and should clear that rust right up. I've never seen any problems with the brass stuff. Fifteen or 20 minutes whould do a decent job. There is an excellent article in the "articles" section in the left nand margin on rebuilding a Schebler cast iron carb, good photos and everything. Once caution though, the article talks about removing the brass like it will just come out no problem. Of course, most of us have learned the hard way after twisting off a jet or a fuel nozzle that it doesn't. Don't try it without applying gentle (propane) heat first and a proper removal device (screwdriver, wrench, etc) that fits EXACTLY right with no slack, otherwise you'll be in trouble.
