It is a valve, attached to a spring made of 2 different types of metal. At a specific temp, the 2 different metals will move (it's a physics thing, one metal expands more than the other with temp change...), opening or closing the valve. This changes the amount of water flowing through the radiator, and holds a constant water temp. --->Paul
