I grew up with red (and still have an affinity for it), but have a gray and red (8N Ford) now, 'cause that's what I can afford and it does (for the most part) what I need it to. I, too, believe that it's all a matter of personal preference (just like Ford, Chevy or Dodge), however, some brands (i.e. JD, IH, etc.) were more suited to row crop tillage, while some (Ford, Ferguson, etc.) were more suited to 'general purpose' stuff...
