Bill, if you are considering a diesel truck, do NOT buy a chevy diesel. They are the most prehistoric diesel engine on the market today. Probably one of the best, and definetly longest lasting engine is the Cummins. Before you jump into this though, consider the following. Will you use this truck enough to make the diesel worth the extra cost. Don't get me wrong, a diesel is a great engine, you get good power and descent mileage. But a diesel can be your worst nightmare in cold weather. If you aren't too concerned about mileage, then I would get a truck with a big block, such as a chev 454 or a Ford 460. Sure they're not as fuel efficient, they are a much better route to go in the winter. We go to a lot of tractor pulls, and our truck is powered by a 454. When we are loaded down (by that I mean a One-Ninety and D-21 Allis) we often times can outrun the diesel powered trucks, and I am not kidding you. As far as weight capacity goes, It depends on what you are hauling. If it is an M Farmall, a 3/4 ton is more than enough. If you have a lot of weight to haul I suggest a one ton with duals. When you go to a one ton, the rear end is heavier than a 3/4. In both Ford and Dodge the 3/4 tons have Dana 60 rear ends. But more often than not, the true one tons will have a Dana 70, this is a better rearend than the 60. On our chevy one ton we pull 26,500 lbs. to the pulls every weekend. If you are pulling anything for weight, definetly go with a good fifth-wheel trailer, they pull better, and are much safer than a bumper hitch trailer.

Today's Featured Article - An Old-Time Tractor Demonstration - by Kim Pratt. Sam was born in rural Kansas in 1926. His dad was a hard-working farmer and the children worked hard everyday to help ends meet. In the rural area he grew up in, the highlight of the week was Saturday when many people took a break from their work to go to town. It was on one such Saturday in the early 1940's when Sam was 16 years old that he ended up in Dennison, Kansas to watch a demonstration of a new tractor being put on by a local dealer. It was an Allis-Chalmers tractor dealership, ... [Read Article]
