See what you can find! There are many tractors out there that would work well. I would make my choice on the basis of what is available, if parts can be obtained easily and affordibly, what jobs I anticipate using it for. I would not limit myself to something that fits a small garage/shop as another building is something you will want to build anyway. Believe me. Sometimes somewhat bigger tractors can be found for a lot less money than the little ones.

In reading through the posts, no one has mentioned a front end loader, which is something I would have to have on any smaller tractor. I find that I use the loader almost every time I start the tractor, for all sorts of jobs. There is always something to pick up and haul. I also would suggest a tractor with an adequate hydraulic system, preferably power steering and a wide front end. As others have said, a 3 point hitch really adds to the versatility of the tractor and allows it to use standardized implements. Another consideration is gas or diesel fuel. Gas engines are easier to start in very cold conditions than diesels and are usually much cheaper to overhaul. Diesels may last longer and, in my experience use lots less fuel and seem to pull stronger.

I may raise a few hackles among the readers, but I am not particularly interested in restoring a tractor, but rather in keeping the old iron working and earning its keep. There is no sense in my putting a fancy paint job on my tractor, since the way I use it, it is going to get dirty, will parobably leak some oil and maybe will get scratched up now and then. It is a worker, not a showpiece. Just my opinion though.

Today's Featured Article - Harvestin Hay: The Early Years (Part 2) - by Pat Browning. The summer of 1950 was the start of a new era in farming for our family. I was thirteen, and Kathy (my oldest sister) was seven. At this age, I believed tractor farming was the only way, hot stuff -- and given a chance I probably would have used the tractor, Dad's first, a 1936 Model "A" John Deere, to go bring in the cows! And I think Dad was ready for some automation too. And so it was that we acquired a good, used J. I. Case, wire tie hay baler. In addition to a person to drive th ... [Read Article]
