Hood and gas tank were already off to clean gas tank,so we started out good ! Had to use a 3 ft pipe to break head bolts loose. Got things cleaned up. Friend dropped by with a tap and die set,we cleaned all the bolts and holes. After we fished the tap out of a water jacket hole .....not sure how he managed to lose it down in there!!! All the valves move good. Pistons have some wobble to em,less than 16th of an inch. Still probably not good. Enough groove/lip at top of sleeves to catch your finger nail, but hard to feel with you fingers. Pretty good thunder storm rolled through and ran us in the house for a couple hours. Got gasket and head back on. Oil changed. Wouldn't start.......check plug wires, all good. Check all plugs for spark, all good. Take carb off and find some nasty fluid had dripped into it while cleaning valves. Cleaned it real good. No start. Check everything again.....nope. Take distributor cap and coil off, looks fine. Put em back on. Fires right up! Ran a couple syrup bottles of gas through it, got it nice and warm ,re torque head bolts. Still smoking some. Seemed to get better longer it ran. Just for fun the "parts" tractor from TN was sitting there so we pulled the head off, lots of carbon build up ,but valves all move nicely and Pistons don't wobble like the other motor...it's a 2n. Missing governor, carb starter... tires are shot. And lift doesn't work.....used parts off that for Ernie.... thoughts on a motor swap if this 8n continues to smoke?
Friend, Harry just before he lost tap in water hole....

I was driving the 1948 8N Ford tractor that Jimmy bought in 48 new This was prebably in about 1951 and maybe even befor the house was built.
