The smaller head chamber will increase your compression ratio and increase cranking load If the final compression ratio is not above 8.5-9 to 1 you should be ok on regular gas. Your neighbour is right that all small block Chevy heads will interchange as far as to bolting to the block.But if you bolt a 305 head with it's tiny combustion chamber on a sb 400, it will have near 15 to 1 compression and will detonate itself to death in a few miles.
