Had to put down an "almost pet" today.

Looked out the bedroom window this morning and it looked like a dead skunk out in the yard. After getting dressed I went out for a closer look. Sure it was what looked like the skunk that always came onto the back porch to eat cat food. He was tame enough that I could open the door and he would be no more that a foot from me and would keep right on eating until I made him move.

It turns out that I had bought a jar of 100 percent peanut butter. The darned stuff was more oil than anything else. Couldn't even get mixed beyond the liquid state. Thinking rather than just throwing in the garbage I would put it out in the back yard for the critters.

Seems my almost pet had a penchant for peanut butter and had gotten the jar stuck over his head. He wasn't moving at all so I thought I might just grasp the jar and see if it would come off. I had the jar and the skunk about a foot off the ground when he came to life. Being a fast thinker I let go of the jar and cleared out of the area. He did spray a little but none got on me other than some vapor. He kept going in circles and I knew he would never get free. Got the 22 and proceeded to put him down. Always considered myself a good shot, but standing in a cloud of skunk odor made me take more than the customary one shot. Of course, the desire to run also played into my decreased shooting abilities.

Neighbor down the road about a quarter mile heard the shots and instantly knew what I was shooting. Seems the stink got there about as fast as the rifle sound.

After dropping the skunk in a post hole with his head and jar up I retrieved the jar with ease. Only thing I can figure is that he had created a vacuum in the jar that was released after I punctured the with a bullet.

Last niht I dreamed about the day that I plowed the field of about 10 acres over on what Jimmy and Dandy called the Ledbetter field. I was driving the 1948 8N Ford tractor that Jimmy bought in 48 new This was prebably in about 1951 and maybe even befor the house was built. This would have made me to be about16 years old and I drove the tractor for nothing and would have paid to drive it if I had had any money which I didn't, but neit ... [Read Article]
