I just let the answering machine take the calls, both on my landline and cell phone. If it's important, they'll leave a message. 99% of them do not.
While I wouldn't do it today because of the repercussion that a telemarketer could do, I managed to get the last laugh one time to a telemarketer, about 20 years ago. I was working night shift and I had just woke up late in the afternoon, about the same time they would start to call. (This was before caller ID) A pleasant-sounding lady on the other end started asking the courteous questions, like how I was doing and if I was enjoying my day. I decided to play along and politely answered her and even asked a few back myself, probably for about a minute. She then asked if I worked out or exercised. I did and I made sure I told her where I worked out and all the weights that I used. She told me all the exercise that she did and how many hours a week she worked out. She then told me that when you exercise, you actually destroy muscle tissue and that the body rebuilds it. If pushed hard, the body rebuilds it larger than before. (I knew that fact. It's how body-builders get huge, toned muscles) The conversation then switched to a new supplement that was on the market. She told me all about it and how it was so much more wonderful than anything else on the market. I was still polite to her and acted interested in her product, having her describe it to me and had her tell me the ingredients they put into this product. At the very end, she somehow told me the price of this magic elixir, which I recall was about $250 for a 30 day supply, quite a bit of money 20 years ago. I wasn't phased and said that good products demand high prices. After about 20 minutes of this sweet-talking, she then casually said that she was going to switch me over to the person that would take my address and my money. I casually mentioned to her that I had no intention of every buying her product.
There was this long silence on the other end....
She asked me when she had lost the sale, because she thought every thing was going so smooth. I told her that there never was going to be a sale because the minute she called me I decided that I was going to waste her time exactly the same way that she was wasting my time.
Suddenly she started swearing at me like a sailor on shore leave and I honestly haven't heard as many swear words come out of a woman's mouth before or since.
I was laughing out loud as it was her who hung up on me.

Today's Featured Article - The 8N and the Fox - by Zane Sherman. Dec. 13 1998, Renfroe, Alabama. Last niht I dreamed about the day that I plowed the field of about 10 acres over on what Jimmy and Dandy called the Ledbetter field. I was driving the 1948 8N Ford tractor that Jimmy bought in 48 new This was prebably in about 1951 and maybe even befor the house was built. This would have made me to be about16 years old and I drove the tractor for nothing and would have paid to drive it if I had had any money which I didn't, but neit ... [Read Article]
