The son of a friend was killed in a similar accident a few years ago. The way I understand it happened is he had a clip on air chuck, he was inflating a tire and the phone rang, he went and answered the phone, and when he got back to the tire it blew because it was way over-inflated. I don't think it was a split rim. I saw a tire blow on a truck once, just sitting in the sun in our yard. I'm glad I wasn't close to it!
