: I have a 1952 Ferguson TEA 20. It was originally a 6v system. It has been converted to 12V. I am having trouble starting the engine and it is running a little rough. There is a resistor (I think) between the battery and the original Lucas 6V coil. I still get 12V from the coil side of this resistor and the coil when I check it with a meter. It seems like I should get 6V. I am considering replacing the coil. Can I put a 12V coil in and remove the resistor anyway? Hello Jay, It sounds like you really didn't have a resistor in the line for the plus voltage for the coil. Probably the coil has overheated and burned up. This can cause a lot of strange engine running problems. If I were you I would replace the 6v coil with a 12 volt coil that does not require a balast resistor like the type they used in the 60's. I'm sure that they are available at the parts stores. Later model cars have coils that are wound to use balast resistors that reduce the batt voltage to about 7 volts. When you start the engine the starter switch shorts the balast resistor out so that a full 12v is sent to the coil. That increases the high voltage to make the engine easier to start. For an older tractor you don't need to get that fancy. Just make sure to use a coil that is 12v and does not use a balast resistor. Good luck, Keith R.
